VOD Technology Project |
|
|
VOD is the abbreviated form of the term Video on Demand. In India, this Video on Demand or the VOD technology project is used to count the ballots for the state assembly as well as congressional seats. According to the statistics, Video on Demand or VOD technology has become the "killer application" of almost all advanced residential telecommunications companies. The VOD technology project came in use first in Los Angeles and California to measure the ballots, in 2002. Then, this project featured a total of eight videos in three categories. The foremost VOD technology manufacturer company was Altrio communication.

Other than Altrio communication there are also few reputed software companies that launched VOD technology. One of those companies is MDEC. MDEC’s VOD technology project includes design, development and lab testing of software, firmware and hardware of a Voice, Video and Data (VVD) network. MDEC engineers have been developing the hardware components for its VOD technology since 1994. The major hardware components needed to deploy VOD technology are:
- Data Services (High speed digital Internet Access) for customers
- E-Commerce for customers and merchants
- Video-Conferencing
- Personal Video Recording (PVR) Service
- Data Mining Services for customers and merchants
- Voice services (telephone) for customers
The software for the VOD technology project involves development of various application components. Primarily, it is a client or server application, based on an object-related database stored in MDEC’s AlphaServer, and client software installed on MDEC MediaPC’s at customer premises within the Local Area Network (LAN). Some of the major software components are:
- Financial/Accounting for customers and merchants
- E-Commerce for MDEC customers
- Data Mining for customers and merchants
- Intranet for MDEC merchants

Since VOD applications needs very large data storage, with 24x7 availability, MDEC engineers have developed its RAID system with hot-swappable hard drives, and scalable up to 100+ Terabytes.
